Recovering files from formatted hard disks

The format command is not destructive - it does not destroy or eliminate all of the data that comprises a file. The format command simply removes reference information that Microsoft Windows uses to locate files on the hard disk. It does not delete the files themselves and thus they can be recovered.

If you have lost important files due to the format of your hard drive the best option is to recover files is to conduct a full sector search. We recommend the following settings found under the "OPTIONS" button:

If you have accidentally deleted a Windows partition from your computer (eg. "C:\" drive) the drive will not appear in the "Select drives to search" screen. Recover My Files will not be able to obtain access to the hard disk in order to start the recovery process. In this case it is possible to add a new partition to the drive (make the partition the maximum size available) and then reformat the drive to provide the program with a drive letter. This process is not destructive and you will then be able to use Recover My Files to recover the files that it contains.

When you have completed the recovery don't forget to reset the Option settings to "Defaults" (using the button provided).
